Jean-Claude Tardif, M.D., Clinical Director
Director, Montreal Heart Institute Research Institute
Dr. Jean-Claude Tardif is professor of medicine at the Montreal Heart Institute, where he also serves as a cardiologist and Director of the Research Centre.
Dr. Tardif graduated from Université de Montréal with his medical degree in 1987 and completed his fellowship in cardiology in 1992. He then completed a research fellowship at the New England Medical Center, Tufts University in 1994. Returning to Montréal, he took up a position as cardiologist at the Montreal Heart Institute that same year. Dr. Tardif is the Director of the Cardiovascular Health Network of the Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec and also holds the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Pfizer Chair in Atherosclerosis.
Dr. Tardif has authored and co-authored more than 400 articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed publications including The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of the American Medical Association, Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. In addition, he has written 25 book chapters and has edited several books. He is the principal investigator of several large international clinical trials in the field of atherosclerosis, as well as principal investigator, with Dr. Michael Phillips, of the Genome Canada/Genome Quebec project, “Pharmacogenomics of Drug Efficacy and Toxicity in the Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease.”
Michael Phillips, Ph.D, Scientific Director
Dr. Michael S. Phillips, Ph.D. is the recipient of a federal Canada Research Chair in Translational Pharmacogenomics. He is also an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Montréal. He is principal investigator, with Dr. Jean-Claude Tardif, of the Genome Canada/Genome Quebec project, “Pharmacogenomics of Drug Efficacy and Toxicity in the Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease.”
Dr. Phillips obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He then worked with Merck Research Laboratories on human pharmacogenetics, and subsequently was Associate Director in the Department of Pharmacogenetics at Orchid BioSciences, Inc.

Tibor van Rooij, Bioinformatics Director
Mr. van Rooij has been with the Pharmacogenomics Centre since its inception in 2005. His team’s efforts concentrate on the development, implementation, and integration of Bioinformatics algorithms to convert genome information into knowledge. Medical and Clinical Informatics solutions are being designed to facilitate data transfer and the translation of genomic information into the clinic while abiding by stringent FDA and Health Canada standards. Previously, Mr. Van Rooij worked with Dr. Tom Hudson at the McGill University and Genome Quebec Innovation Centre on the integration of de novo and third party solutions for a rapidly expanding high-throughput DNA microarray facility, creating a pipeline consisting of a LIMS, Oracle DB, and multiple analysis, data-mining and reporting packages.
Mr. Van Rooij graduated from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Victoria where his studies included Biology, Computer Science, and Computational Biology.
